Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Al Hirschfeld Theatre

In 2019, first showing at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 motion picture Moulin Rouge was modified into the well-loved live staging in Broadway. Originally created by Baz Luhrmann, it was brought to the stage by Tony Awardees and cast members like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who embodied the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and the creatives including director Alex Timbers and music arrangements and orchestrations by Justine Levine, behind the scenes.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is an adaptation full of young passion, love, and loss that presents to us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 19th century and at the pinnacle of Bohemianism, during the period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, searches for his dream and inspiration. He aspires to begin a successful career as a writer and moves to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two local acquaintances, Lautrec and Santiago, who tell him to pen a play that they can showcase. It is in the hidden world of the Moulin Rouge nightclub where he meets Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge that he wishes to get to know more. Their developing love however faces an almost insurmountable obstacle in the form of the boastful and greedy Duke of Monroth, who is promised Satine by the nightclub’s owner Harold Zidler, in agreement for a considerable financial expenditure to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So starts Christian and Satine’s struggle for love on the live stage.

Essentially a love affair that remains a sure favorite in current times, the show is also a combination of both classical and modern music, incorporating songs not just from the original film adaptation, but also song mash-ups and renditions from modern songs that were interlaced into the narrative of the musical.
