Moulin Rouge - The Musical

Al Hirschfeld Theatre

In 2019, premiering at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 film Moulin Rouge was modified into the iconic musical adaptation in Broadway. Originally written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, it was brought to the stage by famous cast members including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who were the original cast members of Christian and Satine respectively, and the creatives including director Alex Timbers and music arrangements and creations by Justine Levine, behind the curtain.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is an adaptation filled with young passion, love, and loss that touches on all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 1800s and at the peak of Bohemianism, during the time period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, searches for his dream and inspiration. He hopes to start a successful career as a writer and journeys to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new friends, Lautrec and Santiago, who influence him to write a play that they can flaunt. It is in the underworld of the Moulin Rouge nightclub where he meets Satine, the star of the the infamous nightclub that captures his attention. Their budding relationship however encounters a difficult challenge in the form of the boastful and greedy Duke of Monroth, who is promised Satine by the nightclub’s promoter Harold Zidler, in agreement for a substantial financial investment to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and improve the nightclub's standing. So starts Christian and Satine’s struggle for love on the live stage.

Basically a love tale that remains relatable and relevant up to today, the show is also a melting pot of both old and new music, incorporating numbers not just from the original film adaptation, but also song mash-ups and medleys from popular songs that were woven into the narrative of the play.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing for a limited time on October at Sunday 27th October 2024, at Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
