Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Al Hirschfeld Theatre

In 2019, debuting at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge was converted into the iconic live staging in Broadway. Originally written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, it was brought to the stage by Tony Awardees and cast members including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who embodied the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and creative experts including director Alex Timbers and music arrangements and medleys by Justine Levine, behind the main stage.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a show exemplifying young passion, love, and loss that presents to us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 19th century and at the pinnacle of Bohemianism, during the time period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, tries to find his big career break. He aspires to set in motion a chance to succeed as a writer and moves to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new friends, Lautrec and Santiago, who tell him to pen a musical that they can flaunt. It is in the underbelly of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the entertainer of the the renowned entertainment venue that captures his attention. Their forbidden romance however faces a difficult challenge in the persona of the rich and powerful Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s owner Harold Zidler, in exchange for a considerable financial trade-off to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So starts Christian and Satine’s struggle for love on the Broadway stage.

Fundamentally a love tale that remains a sure favorite even now, the show is also a melting pot of both old and new music, combining songs not just from the Baz Luhrmann's original, but also musical mash-ups and renditions from modern songs that were woven into the narrative of the musical.
