Moulin Rouge - The Musical

Set in the artistic period during the end of the 19th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily taken from French history. The show is set in and is focused on retelling the dealings of true-to-life nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, named the Moulin Rouge, where the patrons come for unadulterated fun. By the late 19th century, Moulin Rouge became renowned for its French Cabaret elegance – vibrant, loose, and a somewhat crazy lifestyle. This Parisian venue that the musical was inspired by also affected the creative team, with Baz Luhrmann and the show's creators stating that they did take parts of the late 1900s history, and it can assuredly be viewed in the production. The decor, costumes, musical arrangements, and choreography (which showcases a lot of can-can dance) all evidently pay homage to to the film version of Moulin Rouge.

It is in this decade of history leading up to the 1900s and smack in the middle of the French La Belle Époque, a period pointed to as the height of beauty and spreading artistry, where the forbidden story of two lovers finally begins. Christian, an American writer who travels to Paris searching for a successful passion, meets Satine, the premier entertainer of the Moulin Rouge. The pair, despite both external and internal challenges, fall deeply in love and settle for a concealed affair with each other due to their uncontrollable feelings.

Contrary to other accounts, the time of La Belle Époque was criticized by many not as a time of cultural and artistic development. Many are convinced that these years were all about the elite's triumph over the poor. the Broadway musical, however, chose to present the decade in a more favorable light by highlighting the romantic Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as seen through Christian and Satine’s evolving love story throughout the play.

In this decade, locals and tourists have the opening to enjoy the show most likely also loved by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing at an equally colorful and astounding venue, Al Hirschfeld Theatre. With interior decor just as dazzling as the set that it is holding, Al Hirschfeld Theatre is the ideal fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited showing on Friday 1st November 2024.
