Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Al Hirschfeld Theatre

A tale of two falling in unlikely love, Moulin Rouge! The Musical recounts to us a devoted but difficult love story in the equally intimate city of Paris, France. In the underbelly of Montmartre, Christian, a motivated American writer who arrives in Paris with nothing but hope in his heart, stumbles upon the most beautiful woman he has seen and performer, Satine, in the renowned nightclub Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine then start to have romantic encounters, but in secret, as another affluent patron sets his sights on Satine as his prize.

Paying tribute to Baz Luhrmann's original that was staged more than a decade after the late film, Moulin Rouge! The Musical’s first hurdle was to present an unfamiliar setting to a new generation. The best move of the crew, just like the original film, was to present the tragic love story with never heard of renditions of this generation's pop arrangements. The next move was to supersize the musical numbers and truly turn the show into a “a modern retelling of Moulin Rouge”, as the production team refer to it. The product, as watched on the Broadway stage, was an enormous collection of awe-inspiring medleys, mash-ups, and arrangements. Though the Broadway play stays true to some of the 2001 movie's favorite songs including Lady Marmalade, the Broadway show now has pop hits from the recent decade including Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, Beyonce’s Single Ladies, and Britney Spears’ Toxic among so many other pop songs.
