Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Al Hirschfeld Theatre

In 2019, premiering at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 motion picture Moulin Rouge was transformed into the well-loved live performance in Broadway. Originally written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, it was performed beautifully by Tony Awardees and cast members like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who embodied the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and the creatives including director Alex Timbers and music numbers and creations by Justine Levine, behind the main stage.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a play filled with young passion, love, and loss that touches on all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 19th century and at the pinnacle of Bohemianism, during the span of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, looks for his path to success. He aspires to set in motion a chance to succeed as a writer and journeys to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two local contacts, Lautrec and Santiago, who advise him to pen a play that they can flaunt. It is in the underbelly of the Moulin Rouge nightclub where he meets Satine, the performer of the the renowned entertainment venue that catches his eye and heart. Their forbidden romance however faces a haughty competitor in the form of the rich and powerful Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s promoter Harold Zidler, in agreement for a considerable financial investment to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So begins Christian and Satine’s struggle for love on the musical stage.

Basically a love tale that remains sweet and praiseworthy up to today, the musical is also a combination of both classical and modern music, incorporating arrangements not just from the 2001 film, but also song mash-ups and renditions from popular songs that were woven into the creative direction of the musical.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing for a limited season on September at Tuesday 10th September 2024, at Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
