A secret affair in the middle of a bustling city, Moulin Rouge! The Musical shares with us a classical tale of romance in the equally romantic city of Paris, France. In the districts of Montmartre, Christian, a motivated writer who journeys in Montmartre with an aim to succeed in writing, meets the would-be love of his life and club entertainer, Satine, in the nightclub Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine then choose to keep their developing love a secret, as another wealthy benefactor sets his sights on Satine as his woman.
Being a stage adaptation that was created more than a decade after the 2001 movie, this Broadway play's first hurdle was to take this known narrative and giving it a modern touch. The genius stroke of the team, just like the original film, was to share the tragic love story with alternate and fresh renditions of modern popular arrangements. The obvious solution was to supersize the musical numbers and truly turn the musical into a “a modern retelling of Moulin Rouge”, as the production team call it. The result, as viewed on the live stage, was a great combination of unforgettable medleys, mash-ups, and renditions. Though the musical stays true to some of the original picture's favorite songs including Lady Marmalade, Moulin Rouge now has pop hits from more recent years including Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, Beyonce’s Single Ladies, and Britney Spears’ Toxic that is more familiar to younger audiences.
