Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Al Hirschfeld Theatre

In 2019, debuting at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 motion picture Moulin Rouge was transformed into the well-loved live performance in Broadway. Originally created by Baz Luhrmann, it was performed beautifully by Tony Awardees and cast members like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who were the original cast members of Christian and Satine respectively, and production crew including director Alex Timbers and music arrangements and medleys by Justine Levine, behind the main stage.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is an adaptation full of young passion, love, and loss that touches on all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 19th century and at the pinnacle of Bohemianism, during the span of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, tries to find his big career break. He hopes to begin a successful career as a writer and travels to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new contacts, Lautrec and Santiago, who influence him to pen a musical that they can put on. It is in the underworld of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the entertainer of the the renowned entertainment venue that he wishes to get to know more. Their forbidden romance however meets a haughty competitor in the person of the wealthy and corrupt Duke of Monroth, who is promised Satine by the nightclub’s promoter Harold Zidler, in agreement for a large financial expenditure to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and bring Moulin Rouge up to the next level. So begins Christian and Satine’s struggle for love on the musical stage.

Fundamentally a love affair that remains relatable and relevant in current times, the show is also a melting pot of both old and new music, putting together numbers not just from the 2001 film, but also performance mash-ups and medleys from popular songs that were injected into the plot of the musical.
