A secret affair in the middle of a bustling city, Moulin Rouge! The Musical tells us a tragic yet swoonworthy story in the equally passionate locale of Paris, France. In the districts of Montmartre, Christian, a motivated American writer who arrives in Montmartre with the goal of achieving his dreams, encounters the most beautiful woman he has seen and club entertainer, Satine, in the renowned nightclub Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine then start to have romantic encounters, but in secret, as another affluent patron sets his target on Satine as his woman.

Being a stage adaptation that was created more than a decade after the 2001 motion picture, this musical's early challenge was to keep a relatively old plot relevant to a new audience. The best move of the team, just like the 2001 film, was to tell the secret romantic affair with never heard of renditions of this generation's popular numbers. The obvious solution was to expand the song list and truly make the show into a “a modern retelling of Moulin Rouge”, as the creators refer to it. The result, as watched on the actual stage, was a melting pot of smashing medleys, mash-ups, and arrangements. Though the Broadway play retains some of the 2001 movie's chart-topping numbers including Lady Marmalade, Moulin Rouge now includes pop songs from the recent decade including Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, Beyonce’s Single Ladies, and Britney Spears’ Toxic that is more familiar to younger audiences.
