Before its debut in 2019, Moulin Rouge! The Musical needed to take on the challenge of exceeding or at minimum being at par with the original film of the same name. As viewers can attest to, Moulin Rouge in Broadway has become one of Broadway's treasures with an impressive turnout each show from both fans and critics alike. Broadway World’s Miranda Keating even praised the production after watching, saying “Honestly, as as the curtain was pulled back, I was immediately immersed into the heart-racing love story of Christian and Satine. When the final act concluded, I originally had no visible reaction. I was blown away by the whole musical.” The Broadway hit resumes its productions to date, now reaching New York and to be staged at Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Thursday 24th October 2024, Al Hirschfeld Theatre known as one of the city's ultimate show venues with a beautiful stage, acoustics, and design both in and out of the theatre.
The play's plot itself is a fresh retelling of the 2001 film focused on Christian and Satine, an American writer arrives in Montmartre to find out his dream and path in life, and a star performer in the Moulin Rouge nightclub, respectively. Christian and Satine begin a secret affair as they become more acquainted with each other, and it is in their affair that they face challenges that at many times seem insurmountable, though fate continues to bring them closer together.
In the approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes of the whole play, this show is shared mostly through music, with awesome scoring from the production crew, which is a mixture of mash-ups, medleys, and even classical numbers. Manchester Media Group was quoted that the musical is “an audio and visual masterpiece that translated beautifully on stage.” From the colorful opening number up to the last performance, the musical’s intensity shines through; add to that the fact that even the actors and actresses are composed of singer Broadway veterans like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo performing the characters of Christian and Satine and you have another Broadway gem on your hands.
