Moulin Rouge – The Musical

Al Hirschfeld Theatre

Gear up for what The Guardian calls “deservingly dazzling” as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing for a limited season in New York, staged only in New York at Al Hirschfeld Theatre this fall. Fall in love with 19th century Paris as it comes to your city and find out what it takes to fight for love this coming October.

With the guidance of Baz Luhrmann, the director of the original motion picture produced in 2001, the ongoing musical is a live staging of the said original. Also following the tale of Christian and Satine and their tragic love, the musical is produced with a beautifully decorated set fit for its late 19th century time period, while expanding its song arrangements to not only include the classic songs loved by many from the original film, but also mash-ups and medleys of new songs that were not accessible when the previous movie was produced.

Loved by viewers as one of the unrivaled shows from Broadway, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is only available for a limited time at Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Make sure you’re able to secure your tickets and buy your seats quickly for this Friday 25th October 2024 showing!

Moulin Rouge - The Musical

Al Hirschfeld Theatre

In 2019, premiering at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 film Moulin Rouge was converted into the well-loved live performance in Broadway. Originally produced by Baz Luhrmann, it was performed beautifully by famous cast members such as Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who were the original cast members of Christian and Satine respectively, and production crew including director Alex Timbers and music arrangements and orchestrations by Justine Levine, behind the scenes.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is an adaptation full of the triumph of love against odds that touches on all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 1800s and at the height of Bohemianism, during the time period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, tries to find his dream and inspiration. He dreams to begin a chance to succeed as a writer and journeys to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new friends, Lautrec and Santiago, who advise him to write a musical that they can put on. It is in the underworld of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the performer of the the renowned entertainment venue that catches his eye and heart. Their developing love however meets a difficult challenge in the form of the rich and powerful Duke of Monroth, who is promised Satine by the nightclub’s owner Harold Zidler, in exchange for a considerable financial trade-off to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So starts Christian and Satine’s secret and tragic love affair on the live stage.

Essentially a classical affair that remains relatable and relevant even now, the show is also a melting pot of both classical and modern music, putting together numbers not just from the 2001 film, but also song mash-ups and medleys from popular songs that were woven into the creative direction of the musical.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing for a limited season on October at Friday 25th October 2024, at Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
