Moulin Rouge – The Musical

Al Hirschfeld Theatre

Get ready for what The Guardian calls “beautifully crafted” as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be available for a limited period in New York, performing only in New York at Al Hirschfeld Theatre this fall. Immerse yourself in a romantic affair as it performs in your location and find out what it takes to fight for love this coming November.

Hand in hand with Baz Luhrmann, the director of the previous motion picture which premiered in 2001, the ongoing musical is a live staging of the said original. Focused on the story of Christian and Satine and their developing romance, the plot is produced with a visually stunning set fit for its late 1900s setting, while updating its song arrangements to not only include the original music from Baz Luhrmann's film, but also new arrangements of current pop songs that were not accessible when the Baz Luhrmann's film was produced.

Praised by many as one of the best musicals from Broadway, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is only available for a limited time at Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Don't miss your opportunity to secure your seats and buy your tickets while available for this Friday 29th November 2024 showing!

Moulin Rouge - The Musical

Al Hirschfeld Theatre

In 2019, first showing at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 film Moulin Rouge was converted into the now-famed live staging in Broadway. Originally created by Baz Luhrmann, it was given more life by famous cast members including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who originated the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and production crew including director Alex Timbers and music scoring and creations by Justine Levine, behind the curtain.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a play exemplifying happiness amidst tragic love that presents to us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 19th century and at the height of Bohemianism, during the time period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, looks for his dream and inspiration. He hopes to start a chance to succeed as a writer and journeys to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two local friends, Lautrec and Santiago, who influence him to pen a musical that they can flaunt. It is in the hidden world of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the performer of the Moulin Rouge that catches his eye and heart. Their forbidden romance however encounters an almost insurmountable obstacle in the form of the wealthy and corrupt Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s proprietor Harold Zidler, in exchange for a large financial trade-off to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and bring Moulin Rouge up to the next level. So starts Christian and Satine’s tale of love and loss on the Broadway stage.

Fundamentally a love tale that remains sweet and praiseworthy even now, the musical is also a combination of both old and new music, putting together songs not just from the original film adaptation, but also musical mash-ups and renditions from new songs that were interlaced into the creative direction of the play.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be running for a limited season on November at Friday 29th November 2024, at Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
